Many non-executive directors of banks are recruited from non-finance sectors of the economy, and do not have experience of credit and lending. Nevertheless, as board members they carry responsibility for the ongoing viability of the organisation, and therefore for the process by which loans are approved and extended. At the least, they need to know what questions to ask to ensure that the credit system is working effectively.
The half-day Credit for the Board of Directors Workshop will make board members familiar with their responsibilities as they relate to credit, help them to understand the fundamentals of corporate credit, and arm them with the questions they should ask when evaluating or approving credit submissions. Even if they are not required to approve credit proposals, this short workshop will help them to understand the credit risks that their organisation faces in its lending activities, and to evaluate the credit process and culture within the Bank. Directors are reminded that loan quality represents the biggest risk that any bank takes, and that the Board takes ultimate responsibility.
There is no self-study or prework for this workshop.
This half-day workshop is designed for members of the Board, who have come from a non-lending background. It is also appropriate for senior non-credit staff (e.g. in HR, IT, Finance and other fields) who may be taking on broader management roles within the Bank.
There are no prerequisites for this workshop.
